This is the second year I will be cycling in VeloSano to raise money for cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. Last year's ride began in the rain and ended in the sun, a metaphor that seemed appropriate to VeloSano's mission: "bike to cure." The picture on my personal fundraising page shows the rain-soaked laminated card that was fastened to my bike for the ride, a card that listed the names of forty friends and family members who are undergoing treatment, are survivors, or have died of cancer. At various points in my ride I read the names of those in whose honor or memory I was riding, holding them close. How moving it was to be riding with 3,000 others who together raised more than $4 million to fund cancer research at Cleveland Clinic.
Sadly, this year more names will be added to the laminated card to be fastened to my bike—a mother with two young children, high school friends Jo and Cindy, college friend Peg, and my cat sitter Danielle. I will be remembering Jennifer, who died this year from breast cancer, and Theresa, who died from ovarian cancer.
This year I thought long and hard before placing my own name on the "Living Hope" team of riders who themselves are cancer survivors, but decided to do so. I was fortunate to have been diagnosed and treated for melanoma in 2015 by a dermatologist who did his training at Cleveland Clinic. It was caught very early and my only treatment was wide excision surgery, which apparently removed all of the cancer. I follow up with him regularly, and at my appointment last week he told me I was "Boring. Just what I like to see." Best compliment I've had in a long time! I'm grateful for the research at Cleveland Clinic that is helping to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
We all know people whose lives have been cut short by cancer or who are now fighting it. By donating to VeloSano through supporting me in my ride, you will help me meet my fundraising goal. Together we will make a significant impact, improving cancer outcomes through innovative research.
