What would you do if you found out you had cancer?
As a physician, my father had insights into diagnoses, prognoses, and terminology that regular patients simply don't have. This was both a blessing and a curse. I can't imagine what he felt when he learned, in 2007, that he had cancer...especially with a diagnosis that optimistically only offers six months to live.
But my father lived almost five years after that. Five years! Let me tell you, those years weren't just days on a calendar to him. Those days meant more smiles and fuller laughs. They heeded deeper conversations and rich self-reflection. They offered more platforms for his tasteless dirty jokes and silly pranks. And they were an opportunity to connect with his God and find peace in this life. Yeah, chemo and radiation were absolute hell on his body. But having lived most of those five years in full remission, my father walked with a mindful appreciation of every unpromised moment. When he passed away on October 5, 2012, my world dimmed and time stopped. But if his battle taught me anything, it's that there is nothing so difficult in this world that you can't be a light for others. That is why I ride not only for my father, but for my grandma Brawner, my Uncle Franklin, my cousin Buzz, for my family, and for strangers I am bonded to through the battle that is cancer.
VeloSano is more than just a bike ride to me. It is an opportunity to help others on their journeys of which I may never fully know, but will always understand. That is why I've participated in all four years of VeloSano. And that is why, for the second year in a row, I am happy to be riding with my sisters as Team Brawner. To be on the road with them, to think of my father in the presence of family, to work together towards a goal that is bigger than us... I know my father would be proud.
