Sitting at work the other day, the song "What a Wonderful World," by Louis Armstrong came on my Pandora radio station. I instantly thought of my father...
I never knew how much he loved that song until the first time he was diagnosed with cancer, a few days after Christmas in 2007. While in the hospital, my siblings and I offered to bring him an iPod so he would have something to listen to when we weren't around. Aside from classical music, all he wanted was "What a Wonderful World." At the time, I remember being moved by the painful irony of his request. But when I hear the song these days, I don't hear irony. I hear peace.
When you come from very little, like my father did, you learn to appreciate that which may seem small. And from these experiences arise a beautiful strength to find appreciation in even the most challenging of circumstances. My father possessed a unique tenderness for hardened things, and a soft but powerful love for the "unlovable." So, when my father was diagnosed with cancer, it should have been no surprise that he requested what he did. My heart was breaking before him (and his before mine), yet he still found peace in his heart.
"I hear babies crying, I watch them grow.
They'll learn so much more, than I'll ever know.
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world..."
Perhaps my father thought of my siblings and I when he listened to this song. Perhaps he thought about the world. I will never know, but I will always find it beautiful.
This year, I am proud to ride along side my sisters, Jen Brawner and Carrie Brawner, in VeloSano 3 as TEAM BRAWNER. We ride in honor of our fathers and our family. Take a moment to check out their pages to learn more about why they participate...
Whether you donate to my page, or theirs, I thank you in advance for supporting this important and necessary cause.
For my father, my family, and for the future of cancer research, I ride...
