Son. Brother. Husband. Father. Uncle. Cousin. Friend.
Surgeon. MBA. MPH.
All of those things changed with this one word: Cancer.
In addition to taking uncles and cousins and parents of friends, this word is also responsible for the hands down worst day of my life. October 5, 2012. The day that my dad lost his battle with cancer. His second battle, actually. And one we hadn't been prepared for. After he went into remission, and continued to have clean check ups, we, maybe foolishly, thought we'd been spared. So when his cancer came back, and quickly took him from us, we were left stunned. In shock. Hearbroken. Even 5 1/2 years later, I think about him every single day. Every single day. And he will be ever present in my mind on July 21 when I join my sisters, Ali and Carrie, for the VeloSano 50-Mile Challenge, in his honor and loving memory, and also to help fund research so the brilliant minds at the Cleveland Clinic can help prevent other families from losing their loved ones far too soon.
That's why I ride.

VeloSano is more than a fundraising event. It’s more than simply a bike ride. VeloSano is a movement with the goal of bringing an entire community together to help one another. 100% of the money raised will support lifesaving cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. The goal is to bring sustainable funding to cancer research by enlisting the passion and energy of thousands of people who wish to give back…including YOU!
